Broken Trail

Dir: Walter Hill, 2006, 3 hrs. (8.6*)

Best Miniseries (Emmy)
This excellent TV miniseries makes a good companion to Lonesome Dove, though not related; directed by veteran film director Walter Hill (48 Hrs). Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church (both won Emmy awards) rescue some Chinese girls sold into slavery, and take them and a herd of horses on the trail to Wyoming. At 3 hrs, it has the epic feel of a long journey on the trail. Emmy nominee Greta Scacchi is also in the cast. 4 Emmys in 16 nominations.

These are the individual film reviews of what I'm considering the best 1000 dvds available, whether they are films, miniseries, or live concerts. Rather than rush out all 1000 at once, I'm doing them over time to allow inclusion of new releases - in fact, 2008 has the most of any year so far, 30 titles in all; that was a very good year for films, one of the best ever.
