The Natural

Dir: Barry Levinson, 1984 (8.1*)
One of those "mythic" sports stories, starring Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs, a terrific pitching prospect whose career is cut short by a shooting (Barbara Hershey). He emerges later as a slugger, with a bat made from a tree struck by lightning (somehow it never gets broken), and with Glenn Close as his inspiration. Kinda Hollywoodish, but also purely enjoyable Americana, as "baseball is the national pastime". From the novel by Bernard Malamud.

These are the individual film reviews of what I'm considering the best 1000 dvds available, whether they are films, miniseries, or live concerts. Rather than rush out all 1000 at once, I'm doing them over time to allow inclusion of new releases - in fact, 2008 has the most of any year so far, 30 titles in all; that was a very good year for films, one of the best ever.
