Fitzcarraldo

Werner Herzog, 1982, Germany (9.0*)
Awesome achievement, as Klaus Kinski plays a wealthy European obsessed with bringing opera, and wife Claudia Cardinale to the Brazilian jungles, which involves moving a large boat up a mountain to a large inland lake so it can navigate inland waterways. The film crew actually did this, so half the film is really about making the film! This becomes a huge adventure, unlike anything ever filmed about one man's obsessed dream.

Les Blank made a documentary of this shooting at the same time, working alongside Herzog. Burden of Dreams is one of the best films about a film ever made. These two films make a perfect double feature as this is one of the greatest adventures ever put on film.

These are the individual film reviews of what I'm considering the best 1000 dvds available, whether they are films, miniseries, or live concerts. Rather than rush out all 1000 at once, I'm doing them over time to allow inclusion of new releases - in fact, 2008 has the most of any year so far, 30 titles in all; that was a very good year for films, one of the best ever.
